Critical Thinking
High Growth Coaches encourage critical thinking
High growth Enterprise Coaches:
- Encourage clients to use critical thinking
- Use a range of tools and techniques to support critical thinking
- Use a range of data collection methods to ascertain facts and supporting evidence
- Question the reliability, validity, authenticity and meaning of data and supporting evidence
- Base decisions and recommendations on validated data
Coaching is about critical thinking and therefore coaches need to be able to help clients to think critically about issues and problems to enable them to make better choices.
Effective coaches help clients to explore issues, identify and evaluate different strategies, actions and options and to make better choices. Business coaches help clients to:
- Use root cause analysis to understand the causes of problems and not just the symptoms.
- Implement effective problem solving strategies rather than relying on intuition alone
- Make decisions based upon data and information and informed opinion rather than merely ‘gut instinct’
- Explore the relationship between actions, behaviours and outcomes
- Make a business case for the preferred strategy
- Plan how to implement the preferred strategy
People often solve problems and make decisions based on their ‘gut feel’ or intuition alone. Consequently, their solutions are ineffective; they have to revisit the problem and they spend much of their time ‘fire fighting’.
Coaches need to help clients to think critically to understand the nature of an issue or problem and to make effective decisions based upon fact, informed opinion and insight.
