Effective Critical Thinking
“The ability to think critically involves three things: (1) an attitude of being disposed to consider in a thoughtful way the problems and subjects that come within the range of one’s experiences, (2) knowledge of the methods of logical inquiry and reasoning, and (3)some skill in applying those methods.” – Edward Glaser (1941)
Effective critical thinking is the result of the use of several simple principles.
It involves clarity, logic, being fair and accurate and the use of relevant information.
When breaking it down into its component parts, Critical Thinking consists of mental processes of discernment, analysis and evaluation.

Critical thinking involves the collection and analysis of data enabling people to make informed choices.
Central to critical thinking is the need to identify and resolve problems which inevitably involves the need to be able to make decisions.
The role of coaches is to help clients to think critically so they can make well informed choices.
Critical thinking skills
Critical thinking is the general term given to a wide range of cognitive and intellectual skills needed to:
- Effectively identify, analyse, and evaluate issues and arguments
- Discover, understand and overcome prejudices and biases
- Formulate and present convincing reasons in support of conclusions
- Make reasonable, intelligent decisions about what to believe and what to do
