Validation of Client Understanding and Commitment
One of the keys areas in which coaches need to challenge clients is concerned with validating their understanding and their commitment to plans. One tool for validating client commitment is the commitment measurement tool outlined below.
Commitment measurement tool
This tool can be used by the coach to encourage the client to precisely identify what level of commitment he has to any agreed course of action. The addition of a humorous note can lighten the mood, but more importantly, use of the tool acknowledges the fact that 100% commitment is unusual, although the phrase ‘I am totally committed to this’ is used frequently. If, when using this tool, the client does select level 10, it is then possible for the coach to test this level of commitment by using ‘what if’ questions. When this tool is used, it is a good idea to record the level of commitment identified by the client as this can be referred back to at a later date, either when holding the client to account for not completing an action or when identifying the level of commitment to another action plan.
