Matching Client Behaviour
Building rapport requires coaches to adopt the ‘second person’ perspective. The second person perspective is achieved when coaches try to understand the client’s point of view rather than looking at things from their own perspective which is known as the ‘first person’ perspective. This can be achieved through matching the behaviour of clients.
Coaches pace and build rapport through a process called matching
Matching simply involves the coach mirroring and complimenting one or more aspects of the client. It is not copying or mimicking: it is more like a dance. Effective matching should look and feel natural and serves to demonstrate that the coach is willing to enter their client’s model of the world. Clients intuitively perceive this which helps them to feel more at ease and to share more about their feelings, ideas and concerns.
Effective coaches understand how to build rapport at multiple levels through the use of a range of simple and effective matching techniques and being aware of the choices they make.
