Features of Facilitation
In many types of group situation, and particularly in complex discussions or those where people have different views and interests, good facilitation can make the difference between success and failure.
Facilitation is often associated used during meetings, away days or other situations where a group of people need to work together to achieve a particular set of objectives.
A good facilitator will be able to provide a structured environment in which all of the group members are able to have input.
The facilitator should act to control the event, preventing activities from running overtime, summarising, keeping things on track and preventing individuals from dominating proceedings.
Another important role is that of recording, collecting and collating the ideas and information generated during the event.
A facilitator should act as a neutral individual whose focus is on the objectives being achieved, rather than any personal objectives and it is this neutrality which can be very valuable, particularly when working with a group of individuals with strong, conflicting opinions.
