Personal Development Plans
As has already been established, there are a wide variety of ways of improving performance. Therefore, in order for coaches to maximise the benefits from CPD, it is essential for them to plan what it is that they want to achieve and how they intend to achieve it.
A personal development plan then acts as a route map for achieving the learning, assisting coaches to keep focused on what it is that they want to achieve and preventing them from being distracted by all of the other development opportSessionies available.
In order to prepare a personal development plan, coaches need to identify the following:
Learning Objectives – What it is that they want to learn?
Actions – What they will do to achieve these learning objectives?
Resources – What they will need in order to support the learning?
Success Criteria – How they will know when they have achieved the learning objectives?
Target Date – By when do they intend to achieve these objectives?
The essence of effective CPD is to identify what development is required and the benefits that will be derived from it. Reflecting on the past and planning for the future in this way makes professional development more methodical and easier to evaluate the benefits of. There are no rules about what constitutes personal professional development and what you need to do. The key to effective personal development is self-reflection and identifying future needs and priorities.
