Visioning Techniques
Visioning techniques are used by coaches in many situations, but they are especially effective during goal setting sessions.
The aim of visioning is to establish the broad context within which more specific goals can be explored and agreed.
There are many tools available to help clients to develop their vision and goals, including those outlined below.
Wheel and Charts of Success
The Wheel of Success
A commonly used tool is the wheel of success. The concept is based upon a circle sub divided into segments. Each segment represents a different dimension, skill or work area: coaches and clients define each segment according to their needs.
Clients are then invited to score out of ten where they are in each segment and where they would need to be to achieve their vision or goal.
By plotting the scores on the Wheel of Success, it gives a visual indication of the gap between now and the desired position. Coaches can then probe and help the client to define in greater detail what success looks like, feels like and so on in each segment.
Charts can also be used in a similar way to determine the gap between now and the desired situation.
The Consequences Matrix
The Consequences Matrix is a great tool for helping clients to explore their feelings and the consequences of making a change. The matrix requires the client to consider the consequences of making and not making the change and what will and will not happen as a consequence.
The Consequences Matrix
The tool helps clients to critically reflect at a deeper level than they might otherwise do. It can be used in conjunction with the ‘pain and pleasure’ model and used to strengthen the client’s commitment to their vision and goals.
